Opportunity Description:

The Volunteer Patient Program is a division of the Health Sciences Experiential Learning Program (HSCELP) within the Faculty of Health Sciences at Queen’s University. A Volunteer Patient (VP) is an individual who has a willingness to work with students and share their authentic experiences. Volunteer Patients provide faculty and students opportunities to teach, assess, and refine a variety of skills, including communication, interview, diagnostic, and clinical skills. Students are beginning their learning and use interview skills to examine the health, social, and psychological aspects of a volunteer’s experience with health (either their own or if they have acted as a caregiver). Participants control the depth of information they provide and students, bound by the Health Professional’s Code of Ethics, must keep all video and print information in the strictest of confidence. The use of pseudo names is required in any written work that the students submit to supervising faculty. The Volunteer Patient Program is a fundamental resource for curriculum. Our goal is to provide hands-on learning in controlled, simulated environments for our students. On Monday, January 30 and Monday, March 6, our Occupational Therapy students will be conducting in person interview sessions in the morning with community members who have neurological conditions. Monday, January 30: Volunteers who have a history of stroke or brain injury. Monday, March 6: Volunteers who have conditions such as (but not limited to MS, ALS, Parkinson’s or Huntington’s disease, and the like. The only requirement for volunteers is a willingness to participate and share their experiences. The interviews will run from 9:15 – 11:30 AM on both dates and each person would be asked to engage with four small groups of students during that time. To confirm participation or if you have any questions, please contact the Angélica Mendieta-Sweet at hscelp@queensu.ca  or by calling 613-533-6000 x 78087. We will follow up with anyone interested.
